Workshop Victoria Hoogstoël

You are very much invited to our workshop Graphic Design

During this workshop, we will focus on experimenting with the different basic notions surrounding graphic design: typography, composition, communication, printing etc. Through collecting materials, storytelling, and drawing, the workshop will collectively approach each step of graphic design’s creation process. Each session will focus on quick assignments employing the use of different techniques, mediums, and materials. We will get an overview of the history of graphic design to define its terms and limits. Our main goal will be to create illustrated Abecedariums (A visualization consisting of the letters of an alphabet). At the end of the process, we will work together on an exhibition showing the experiments made during these weeks.

Bio

My name is Victoria Hoogstoël, I’m a graphic artist born in 1996 in Paris. I obtained a first degree in graphic design in 2017 and moved to Japan for 1 year.  I found myself deeply marked by its aesthetic concepts and its language. Back in France, I focused on my practice of comic-making while working on commissioned advertisements and graphic design. A year later, I continued my studies in graphic design and storytelling at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, located in Amsterdam.

In my work, I like to mix analog and digital techniques. This hybrid process allows different forms to merge: it creates strategies for multiple narratives. Narration is at the heart of my work, I like to create quirky stories, full of humor and melancholy, showing the absurdity of what we take for granted. I’m inspired by everyday life events and mundane interactions. Accessibility is a key element in my research: I like to work with simple systems and methods, where the aesthetics don’t overtake the content. In these constraints and protocols, I find creative freedom. Especially when it comes to type design: I always start from an analog perspective, using physical materials and shapes, before working digitally.
