Aside his personal art work, Elvis López founded in 1989 the Ateliers ’89 Academia di Bellas Artes Aruba and Foundation. Which is today the contemporary art platform for the local art of Aruba. Since 1999. He has been teaching as a guest teacher at the Sandberg Institute and the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam The Netherlands, almost every other year. He educated the many young for years at the Ateliers ’89 and in 2007 at EPB Hato a local high school and later in his most loved Arte den Bario project. The organizer curator of all the workshops and exhibition trough the different projects. Curating the invited teachers, artists in residency, the Aruban contemporary artists towards their respectful projects and exhibition. Al this at the main exhibiting halls at the Ateliers ’89 and Ateliers ’89 San Nicolas, Aruba Art Fair, local exhibition venues, public spaces and a lot of the international exhibitions representing Aruba were he was always involved. He has been teaching and giving lectures in many countries since his first Biennial at the Contemporary Art Museum in Santo Domingo Dominican Republic in 1992.
One of his biggest achievements is however the Caribbean Linked program which he has been organizing since 2012.
MARGRIET KRUYVER studied history of art and is head of department and tutor at the Audiovisual Department (VAV – moving image), at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. Previously, she worked at Arti et Amicitiae, an Artists’ Society in the heart of Amsterdam, where she curated exhibitions, wrote articles on art and made catalogues and books. Her current practice at the Rietveld involves giving direction to the department and together with her team, she organizes student-projects, exhibitions, and publications.
In 2005, Margriet started working with the Ateliers ’89, and in 2008 Gerrit van der Hout joined the organization. Together they curate the program and look for funding in order to make Ateliers ’89 the lively Institute where young people and the public of the island can discover their artistic talents and ambitions and develop them. With several Caribbean institutes like Fresh Milk, ARC Magazine, and the IBB, Margriet works on Caribbean Linked bridging the gap between the islands by stimulating dialogue on contemporary art practice. Margriet is a jury member for the Prins Bernhard Cultuur Fonds (Netherlands).
GERRIT VAN DER HOUT was born in Amsterdam and studied history at the University of Amsterdam. In 1987, he co-wrote the book highlighting the 150th anniversary of Artist Society / Arti et Amicitiae (For Art and Friendship). After that he stayed involved with Arti, organizing exhibitions and raising funds to enable various projects. Gerrit continued working as the coordinator for Arti from 1996 until 2001. In 2001, Gerrit was appointed Head Building and Design at the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht in the Netherlands. In 2008, Gerrit began working with Margriet Kruyver and Elvis Lopez in support of the organization Ateliers ’89 in Oranjestad, Aruba. Together they are responsible for the fundraising for Ateliers ’89 and Caribbean Linked and the coordination of their programs.
